Why Taglit B'ne Israel (TBI)?
I have a dream and Hope that Taglit Bene Israel can become an affiliate of an established organization like the Taglit Birthright Israel to get the right assistance and needed funding to execute what we need to accomplish. I believe the goals of your organization and what I am proposing are the same with a small difference in the criteria of choosing the people to include in our programs.
The biggest loss we Jews face worldwide is Assimilation into stronger and more popular religions that exist around us. While it affects all forms of Jewry, the Bene Israel are even more at risk of extinction due to their few numbers which are scattered all over India.
The below picture depicts One Loss of a Real Indian Jewish Soul into another culture in India. While all loss of Jews cannot be averted, we can at least give our youth a sense of pride and joy of being a surviving rare breed from thousands of years old traditional culture. Provide them with the needed willpower and appreciation for Judaism and show them the way Indian Jews kept Judaism alive and handed it down from generation to generation.
While Bene Israel in Israel have a better chance to remain Jewish, the Indian Jews do not have the same advantages of having a strong Jewish influence around them. There are Bene Israel living in Israel, USA, Canada and Australia who still continue many of our ancestral traditions. There are less than 5000 Jews left in India.
Young Bene Israelis will get to learn how we Bene Israels follow our Jewish traditions and survive as Jews, and remain Jewish despite living far away from our homes. Many will surely be in the same situation as work and careers are now taking them into different countries, even where there might not even exist, a synagogue. Preserving a Jewish Soul is our common agenda and with it will come greater support and patriotism towards Israel, we call our fatherland.
I will suggest that every year we secure finance to get Bene Israel Indian Jewish young adults, both girls and boys from India, to visit different countries where the active community members exist, like Israel, USA, Canada, Australia, and give them an opportunity to explore Judaism outside their homes and get different experiences to create a higher sense of value to remain Jewish.
Such a venture can also be provided to Israeli youth who wish to visit India and learn more about the Indian Jewish heritage and help volunteer to protect the many artifacts and synagogues of India, some that are in a bad state due to lack of number of Jews, needed funding and their remote rural locations, that in the old days flourished with a thriving Jewish community.
I am flexible to other creative partnerships. In My Humble Opinion the scope is vast and we can start even by only scratching the surface and make a big difference in securing a better future for our Jewish communities worldwide.
Aamen and Shalom.
Regards,
Samuel Benjamin.
